Rune Study : Ansuz
Ansuz, Ansur : Áss (Aesir, Divine Ones,); Mouth of Odin
Ansuz is representative of divine inspiration, and manifestation through breath or speech. I really love Tyriel’s take on this rune. (Check it out here.) The creation of our thoughts is something we as beings have the capacity to do. Many of us do this subconsciously. Every moment, we create our thoughts. A lesson of Ansuz, is to bring that creative force into our conscious mind, and use that force to create our hearts desires.
Learning to control our thoughts, and our words, can teach us so much. The old adage “Think before you speak” comes to mind. Being in control of our thoughts is not something the society we live in promotes, at all. In fact, we are so constantly barraged with information, that our minds wander very easily, focusing on mundane, even foolish thoughts. I do not mean to offend by saying this, simply to bring to our attention that we often spend alot of time focused on things that do not help us move forward on a spiritual path. So much of our thought-energy is spent on frivolous pursuits.
Ansuz teaches us to think before we speak, to use the focus of Thurisaz to help us manifest the things we wish to create. Ansuz is sometimes called ‘Ansur’. Phonetically, Ansuz is the answer. It can represent omens coming our way, and a time to be aware of what lies in our path. It is often referred to as the rune of Odin, for it represents the creation of the runes, as we see in this excerpt of the Havamal:
For nine long nights,
Pierced by a spear, pledged to Odhinn,
Offered, myself to myself
The wisest know not from whence spring
The roots of that ancient rood
They gave me no mead,
I looked down;
with a loud cry
I took up runes;
from that tree I fell.” (source)
So, Odin spoke (well shouted, but you get my drift) the runes into being. Words are so powerful. Spells and magical workings all use words to create a desired outcome. Our mouths, our words, our very breath holds the power to create, and also to destry. We must use our awareness, and remember the power our words carry. I have begun to notice that some older people, who have seen and lived through much, do not speak so much. They listen, and observe, and choose their words carefully, for they know the power a careless word could have.
